Post subject: Is it really hard to gather gold or is it just me??
Archived from groups: alt>games>warcraft (more info?)

Greetings all,

Just got my second toon to level 70.. I am struggling to get enough
money for my flying mount. Which made me wonder why am I so bad in
gathering gold.

My main is a rogue. I have 375 skinning and 352 leatherworking.
Currently stuck at 352. My Warlock has 362 Tailoring and 265
enchanting.

Due to some stupid advices from people who pretend to know the game
inside out and being a noob myself I was switching from different
professions with my rogue from day one.. I started as miner/smith on
my rogue so i can craft my own weapons.. then changed to
leatherworking then somehow the stupid retard friend of mine adviced
me to go back mining and lblacksmithing so i can get some good weapons
he linked so I noobly switched back,,, I skipped smithing and gathered
ores and sold them until I got my first mount on level 40... then
decided to do leatherworking after I saw some good crafted items on
other players... It was a realy struggle to have enough money.. when I
hit 62 I got my epic horse... by the time I hit 70 i had 1100 g in my
hand which I used to buy my flying mount and level up my
leatherowrking. I figured out that I was listening to someone who is
not to be listened to when he was begging me for gold to change talent
from time to time (he is still calling me a noob for not dropping my
profs and start blacksmithing).. sometimes he switch talent from fury
to protectoin twice a week and most of the time he borrows gold from
me... ((He is my friend IRL and although he is sometimes a pain in the
neck i still like him))

Now my warlock is 70... And I am grounded. I wasn't able to raise
enough money for my flying mount... good farming places are always
crowded with people fighting to defend the terretory like wild animals
(PVP server). Leather sells but not as good as I wish... sometimes I
spend 6 hours for a mere 20g profit. the Auction House system has
completely lost it. for example Gold Pearl is sold for 1 g with the
vendor but for some reason it sells for 60s in AH and not just one or
2 but most of them.

Daily quests are like farming spots full of people who will turn them
into a battleground.

Gold is flowing slowly... I stopped crafting items I use . and with my
lock I sell bags and with my rogue I make armor kits since those don't
cost a lot to craft and they always sell but it takes a lot of time to
gather the materials needed which slows my progress. I do normal
quests since they gold return is improved but it is still very slow.

Whenever i see someone with an epic flying mount I wonder how they
gathered all... I know that there are people who buy gold but there
are those who were able to gather alot of money... So whats the
secret??.. I tried to check some guides on the net but I won't pay
money for them and the free ones are mostly outdated and belong to pre-
tbc.

I am considering dropping my warclocks enchanting .but I don't know if
that is a good idea... I can take a gathering profession like mining
or herbalism and yes it will take forever to actually level them up
but in the end i will guarantee a good profit if i get them high
enough.

Any advice?

Anyone with a lot of gold can tell me how?

Don't drop enchanting - it is a gathering profession in itself. You
gather from the AH, disenchant and sell the results back. Get the
full auctioneer pack which includes enchantrix. Combined, these can
tell you how much an item on the AH is worth if you disenchant it.
I've tried it and it does work but you need - you need to be wary of
things that enchantrix says disenchant into 1.5x of something. Don't
buy it if the price is more than 1 of that item. To do the farming
you search the AH for green items that you can disenchant and bid the
minimum amount on them. Don't buy out unless it is a *real* bargain -
you don't care whether you get the item or not. You'll win some items
so it doesn't matter if you lose some either. When you get the items
in the post, disenchant them and sell the materials on the AH.

You should use Auctioneer to scan the AH every day for at least a week
before doing this to get a picture of what things sell for.

> Anyone with a lot of gold can tell me how?

Burt Johnson claims to be loaded and says he gets it by farming the AH
for disenchanting purposes. Smile He puts more effort into than I am
willing to and is much richer for it.

To save you some time manually scanning the AH I will give you one
auctioneer related hint: BtmScan Smile

Drop craftings.

They are money sinks with questionable value, only Bind on Pickup
items, are worth it, and you've got to the point in Tailoring which
might mean best to keep it... Endgame Tailoring offers good purples if
you can get the nether...

I wouldn't drop enchanting, but I would take it up to 275, I think
thats what you need to DE outland stuff... Its a lot of effort to
relearn enchanting, but most of the rest of the crafting skills can
probably be rebought to a certainly level quite easily, especially if
your gathering skills are on the go.

Quickest way to make cash (probably recommended to do with rogue, and
leave warlocks skills alone).

Mining and Herbing. While skinnings value is that its not a crafting
skill, it earns like a fifth of the money. Giving your rogue both
might be enough to make up for the Warlock dropping none of his
professions.

Example: I've just rolled an undead warlock. I'm all alliance before
this, so no money or items from alts, buy my own bags, pay for my own
professions. Once I earned the (less than 10) silver to get mining and
herbing, couple of hours later, got 5g in the bank. I'm level 10.

My first char, engineering/mining rogue didn't have that in his bank
at level 55....

The node trackers clash, what I do is click between them when out and
about and often reminded by seeing a herb or a node... Good to level
up the both of them at the same time.

I would estimate it will get you about 600g a day, while doing Daily
Quests at the same time...

Hmm, how did you manage that? Just doing the quests from 60-70 will give
you about 1.5k gold, doing the ones you didn't do while levelling
afterwards will give you a bunch more. My warlock hasn't sold anything from
professions while levelling (gave everything to alts for crafting), hasn't
done Shadowmoon Valley at all and only did half of Netherstorm but I have
the normal flying mount and 3.2k towards the epic one... just do your
quests and you'll make plenty of money.

>Daily quests are like farming spots full of people who will turn them

Have you done the normal quests? If so, I really can't see how you've
managed to lose 4k+ gold... do you spend all your gold on the AH as soon as
you get it? If so, don't - my golden rule is never buy something that's
farmable by myself; it's much much more cost effective to farm and make
some cash from other drops meanwhile than to only spend money by buying
stuff. Yes, PVP server, ok, but I very much doubt that *every* possible
spot is covered; for stuff like cloth there's pretty much the whole of
Outlands where it's possible to obtain it.

Well my secret is not buying anything that I can obtain by myself, and
spending time using my professions as best I can for whatever's most
profitable. I don't really do anything with my leatherworking or tailoring,
but with enchanting look at what materials sell well compared to the price
of the greens needed to get them, and buy the cheap greens, de them and
sell the dusts. My enchanter's made quite a bit of cash that way.

Nope, keep the enchanting, it's a very good moneymaker. Of the professions
you have, leatherworking is probably the least profitable, however if you
get it up to 375 the bop items are good (if you can get the primal
nethers), and I made a load of money while skilling mine up anyway; got my
epic flying mount around the same time I reached 375. As I already said,
don't buy materials to skill it up, farm them instead. I expect the
elemental plateau is a gankfest but it's not the only place where
motes/primals can be obtained.

Having 13,000+ gold, 4 flying mounts and a netherdrake mount, I would advise
your rogue to learn the tricks of the mining trade.

My warlock has herbalism/tailoring, both 375.

I fly around Outland and collect herbs. Most of them can make you
some pretty easy cash.

With tailoring, I watch the AH and buy cloth up when its cheap rather
than grinding it myself. I bolt this cloth and store it, then watch
the prices of netherweave bags on the AH. When the bag prices go up,
I make some bags and put them on the AH. When bag prices drop back
off, usually during the weekends, I hold off on the bags until the
prices go back up. Usually the prices don't drop so far that I won't
make any money, but I prefer to wait and get the most out of those
bags.

If you're an enchanter or have access to large amounts of arcane dust,
farm Netherweb Spider Silk and make Imbued Netherweave Bags. Very few
people sell these on my server, and buying all the mats needed for
them makes it so you make very little money, if you make any at all.
The spider silk ends up costing the most. But if you can get the silk
and dust yourself you save yourself a good amount of cash and stand to
make a substantial amount on the sale of that bag. On my server, 40g+
for those bags.

I tried at one point to market an Ebon Shadowbag (28 slot soul shard
bag), but since so many warlocks out there are already tailors, there
is a very small market for this. Never tried selling the 28 slot
enchanting bag, and never tried selling the 20 slot Primal Mooncloth
bag, but on my server, Primal Mooncloth bags were selling for 300g+.
If you have Primal Mooncloth tailoring, or can make spellcloth or
shadowcloth and trade for PMC, then you might be able to make some
cash, depends on how much you're willing to grind mats.

There is a 24 slot jewel bag pattern available from Consortium at
honored, never tried to sell this but mat cost seems low.

Theres also a 20 and 24 slot herb bag available from the old content
Cenarion Circle reputation at friendly and revered respectively. If
you don't have rep with these guys yet, they buffed the rep gains with
them a few patches ago and as a level 70 should be a fairly simple
task to grind to revered. Both looked like they might have high mat
costs but I didn't check to see what the costs were on my server, nor
what they are selling for, or if anyone is even selling them.

My suggestion would be just do dailys, thats a 100 g from quest alone
+ greens / pots and misc items you can vendor, easy 200 g 1-2 hrs at
the minimum, and you will get lucky eventually and get stuff yuo can
sell on the ah, like when I do netherdrake dailys I will get some
motes of mana, and when Im in skettts I will get some waters,
eventually they add up. I'm sitting at about 18 k gold right now
( not doing pve helps to save money, pvp is very cheap, pro tip #1 ),
I had more but I just dropped 375 tailoring to pick up engineering,
and I'm waiting for 2.3 so I can craft the flying mounts which should
run me about 3-4 k gold, because I'm sitting at 364 or something
engineering and gotta raise it, been lazy.., and I expect I will be
spending a good 1 k + on new enchants for season 3 gear since I just
about have 5 k arena banked.

but err enough of my bragging Very Happy just do what I said, another tip I
will give, I made about 3 k gold within a week doing this by farming
dire maul arena, if you know the spawn rate on the elite and can solo
it, you will get alot of blues that sell 15-500 gold, 500 gold being
if you get the orb of deception which I can sell within minutes of
getting it. Though one time It took me about 34 kills of the elite
before it dropped on a 6-8 hour timer respawn, so about 3 times a day,
but I did get the orb 3 times after only a few kills, so I was
unlucky at the beginning. You may need to bring a friend along, I
farm him on my bm hunter not my shadow priest " Fairplay".

also take the advice of the guys talking about auctioneer, I use to
use it alot, but I pretty much know the price everything sells for,
after playing for a few years so I don't use it much, and yeah dont
ever buy out, so many people put stuff on the ah and don't pay
attention to getting a bid. Also another tip, sundays everyone will
be putting stuff on the ah cheaper due to trying to get rid of the
stuff they got on teh weekend, I find this day to be the best to find
deals, also try to sell stuff fri-saturday, and sell enchanting mats
after tuesday when people get arena points, Im always buying up mad
enchanting stuff when I forget to grab em on sunday.

about the farming professions, Ive never liked them, I can farm like
the next guy, but cant do it consistantly, I don't like relying on one
profession for money, I make money casually, by how I told u, also
elemental plateau, you can make about the same amount of money per
hour, as you can doing dailys, by how lucky you are on mote drops, if
your on a pve server even better, im on pvp server so its constant
death there so I usually go there early morning time. Primal fires
easill sell 20g, but you can get away with 30 g.

Stick with tailoring. Enchanting at that level will be useful to you until
you've bought your epic set, and then drop it if you don't want to spend a
few thousand gold (I am NOT kidding) maxing it out.

Farming is not the best way to make gold. Do the quests you skipped - each
one is 10g or so, and they are generally easy for a 70 to do.

>Daily quests are like farming spots full of people who will turn them

Do them in the morning. It makes a huge difference.

I just got there. a month ago I had 1500g, having just bought an epic and
flying mount for an alt. Between dailies on both of those, quest farming on
the alt (my main has used all those up), and auctioning off items from
drops (two blue recipes worth 300g helped a lot!), I got my 5000 without
much sweat. I'll probably keep it up for a while until I get back up to
1000g or so. Alt #3 will need a flying mount.

Spend 2 hours per day doing gold-earning things. That's all you need to do. *

Quick response: with the skinning, take yourself to Nagrand and farm
the living hell out of the Clefthoof Bulls there. The drop the Thick
Clefthoof Leather (needed especially by druid tanks) that sells for a
very nice profit. I can do between 70 and 100g per hour there farming
those on my hunter.

Transmuting with Alchemy is nice too. I net an easy 14g per day
within 3 minutes just transmuting Primal Earth to Primal Water. With

Or the Cobra Hides in Shadowmoon, my server only has them as 14g, but
they were 50g at one point...

If that price sticks to the high end, the skinning is worth it. Never
made that much from the thick stuff personally...

Only good thing about skinning is the netherdrake daily skin quests
can largely be done off the back of other peoples kills...

My engineering/mining warlock did very well by level 40. Always had plenty of
spare gold, enough to buy enchants like fiery just for the looks and to gear
up via the AH rather than questing. Enough gold to level up engineering by
buying the mats before she was high enough level to gather them.

There are lots of engineered items that you can make a killing on if there is
no competition:

Gyrochronomiton (4g)
Bronze Tube (1g)
Discombobulator Ray (8g, but hard to market)

Some of these items are used for quests and people need them. They can either
wander around SW for an hour spamming trade with "is there an engineer that
will help me make X", or buy my overpriced item in the AH.

When I needed money, I always made sure to have 2 gyros and 2 bronze tubes in
the AH at any given time, and kept a stack of them in inventory to keep the
AH restocked as necessary.

Of course sometimes an idiot will move in on your business and start selling
items cheap (for example, gyros at 50 silver). I've heard of some people
buying them out and cornering the market, but I usually just backed off until
they went away. If I had a lot of inventory on hand, then I would undercut
them (thus ensuring they didn't sell product, got discouraged, and stopped
trying to market their items).

What's funny is that sometimes an idiot will try to sell stacks of items in
the wrong amount, for example Gyrochonomiton x 10. Nobody needs ten gyros, so
I can price a single Gyro slightly less than his stack of ten, and people
will buy my gyro rather than his stack, even though they could buy his stack,
use one, and re-sell the rest at a substantial profit.

Mithril stacks sell for ~ 10g on my server, and I can usually get a stack (as
well as a stack of iron) in a couple circles of the badlands. That can net me
about 10g per hour.

Thorium stacks go for ~ 20g on my server. Most of the time it's still quicker
for me to mine mithril, but I'm starting to look for thorium in the
appropriate places -- it's just been harder to put together a good throrium
mining route (burning steppes and blasted lands have been disappointing).

Primal mooncloth bags are seriously overpriced. Who wants to pay 400G+ for
two more bag slots? Not I.

Not actually overpriced, just look at the materials. 8*primal mooncloth
(50g each on my server), plus 4*spider silk (not sure of the price, maybe
5g each?) and 300g is cheap...

Spider's silk is [maybe] that high on your realm?? I've *got* to start
farming this stuff!

I've also got to start selling them one by one. If I try to get 7 g for a
stack of 10 the auctions often expire!
