Level 24.....

Ok.. Fishing is my favorite way to make cash. It's easy, and quick. After
a short time, you can make 50+ gold per day of fishing without much effort.

I combine my alchemy with fishing, which helps a ton.. you can turn the
blackmouth, firefin and stonescale into something useful for people. Also,
cooking seems to make sagefish sell...

Try Southshore for your level fishing. Be sure to fish EVERY pool.. that
way, when they respawn, you have a chance at getting a floating wreckage.
Floating Wreckages are where the money is at. When you get into your
30's-40's.. STV is the ultimate fishing venue.. some will argue Ashara, but
really.. you can't make as much in one sitting in Ashara as you can in
STV... especially on a good spawn day. Just travel the coast, and fish
every pool you come to, and either use or sell what you fish.. in each
floating wreckage , you will catch a trunk or two, or some rum (which sells
REALLY well) or stranglekelp... in the trunks are usually bolts of some
sort of cloth.. which sell well, especially stacked, in the AH.. and more
often than not, a green pops up regularly.. and sometimes a blue...

If I am saving for something, i almost always fish for it.

Auctioneer:

Else I can advice you not to worry about your crafting professions until
you are 40+ (and got your mount safe). If you want to save for your mount
start out with two gathering professions instead. I prefer Herbalism and
Skinning myself but you can take Mining instead of Herbalism as well.
Herbalism start slow with low-profit herbs but soon catches up (turning
point is Swiftthistle which you will start seeing at level 15+).

Fishing is very useful too. I made my first real money (real for low
levels, that is) by catching Oily Blackmouth and selling them at the
Auction House. Later on gathering Gromsblood and catching Stonescale
Eels and selling them was the best way I found to make money, though
such herbs as Goldthorn helped too.

Hmm, I've been making money on crafting, and I'm low level. I was
surprised that "embossed leather pants" and such sell for a decent
amount at the auction house. Not the sort to make you lots of gold,
but at my level it's a decent amount and more than pays for the
training and materials. I'd use the auction house more, but it's a
bit time consuming to head back to a city all the time. Most of the
crafting professions should pay for themselves, including training
and materials; and they often result in stuff you can use yourself
from the earliest levels, or which an alternate character can use.

The drawback may be time spent gathering/crafting versus time
spent grinding. People in a hurry won't like it. It's intended more
for roleplaying than in supporting an elite lifestyle. I suppose you
may make a bit more money overall sticking to kill/loot/sell/repeat.
But there's no reason to wait until level 40 for profession skills
unless you absolutely must make every logged on moment
economically useful.

Fishing is a bit iffy. All my characters have it, but for the fun of
it, not the money making part. Great for hunters since there's
a ready supply of pet food (depending upon the pet). I hadn't
realized there was a market for oily blackmouth though, I've probably
sold 50 to vendors. I'll start saving them instead.

My best fisher at skill 150 is a level 20 hunter. I have very little
bag space (one slot taken up by a quiver, argh). I found several
floating piles of debris in a row at Darkshore, and was very
frustrated when I'd have to keep running back after every one
to sell stuff. There's no way I could have saved up the bolts of
cloth without a time consuming trip back to the city (and would
the debris still be there when I returned?). Mailing the individual
items would be practical I suppose if I knew in advance that the
expense was worth it.

I have found a fairly easy way to make gold that scales as you level.
And Herbalism/Skinning is that answer. My main on two servers is an
Herbalist/Skinner. I create an alt and plant it in either TB or SW
(where the mailboxes are closest to the AH). Then, as I gather herbs
and leathers I send them to my "AH Bot" The AH bot has both Enchanting
and Leatherworking as skills (LW has a reason and it is short term).
Enchanting to DE any items that do not sell on the AH after a few
attempts. LW so that I can turn all the leather scraps I skin at low
skinning levels into light leather (After I no longer skin scraps I can
dump LW, it is not very long). Along with any supplies I send over all
the greens that drop that I cannot use. I sell them for very little, as
this is pure profit. I check the going rates for the Peacebloom, or
Light Leather stacks and then under cut but a few copper or silver.
This is pure profit, so getting the max money for the sale is not an
issue. The trick is volume. If an item does not sell, I DE it then sell
THOSE results.

Another trick, and this one I will not supply specifics on, just a
general idea, is to find some out of the way vendors and their unusual
recipes/items (*cough* Deviate Scale Cloak or Gloves *cough*). Or
recipes that are NOT available to the other faction. There are several
of both and they are a SUPERB source or coin.

This way, my level 35 Rogue on Scilla had over 150g before he was 30
(not including money already spent on some nice weapons and armor) and
my level 17 Rogue on Gilneas has 50g and he has spent about 10g already.

Fishing is something that I work up but in no hurry.

I can't imagine selling fish (or even things you make with them) for 50g
a day! Is that an exaggeration?

No, it isn't an exaggeration. Here's what I tend to do:

I fish STV almost every day. I generally only do it for a couple hours
before I get bored and move on to other things... but you can fish it all
day if you like. You generally catch 3 things there:

Oily Blackmouth - These go into blackmouth oil (I'm an alchemist as well),
and if I can't sell that, I put the oil into water breathing potions. They
sell alright on my server. I usually don't like to fish Oily Blackmouth
because they are the hardest seller, however, I seem to catch at least 1
mithril trunk with every blackmouth pool.. sometimes 2. I fished one pool
once and got only one fish.. everything else was trunks or stranglekelp.
That was a great blackmouth pool. Wink

Firefin Snapper - These make fire oil. I sell these on the auction house in
stacks of 5 and 20 only. Individuals don't sell, nor do stacks of 10. Not
sure why. 5 and 20 almost always sell, though. Go figure.

Stonescale Eels - These are the best catch of all. I turn them into
stonescale oil and sell in lots of 20 only. I get between 15-20 gold for
each stacvk, depending on the market that day. There are often nights where
my oil is the only oil available on the AH. Those are the best nights. Wink
These are guaranteed sellers, every time. I usually catch 20 per day easily
in STV (and you catch them BETTER in Tanaris). Of course, it helps to know
that the fishing works on cycles, and at midnight, server time, the
stonescale eel really come out in force. I can almost guarantee that I will
stumble on enough stonescale eel for a stack or two each night starting at
midnight, server time.

Beyond this, you have Floating Wreckage. In the southern part of STV on the
west coast, and the entire east coast, you catch Mithril trunks. The only
real difference between this and the iron lockboxes you catch on the west
coast, further north, is that mithril trunks will often have bolts of
runecloth in them. Iron lockboxes usually stop at silk. They all also
usually contain various forms of leather, some cash, and maybe some green
items (and a rare blue or two). Sometimes, as stated in a later post here,
you do catch big ticket items that sell between 30-50 gold themselves.
Those are great fishing days.

So.. I generally wander up and down the ENTIRE west coast of STV several
times during my fishing expedition fishing EVERY SINGLE POOL. This is VERY
important. If you start skipping pools, you will not get nearly as much
stuff to sell. Every pool you fish causes a respawn to happen at some point
in the near future. Might not be in the same spot, but it will happen
somewhere. If you skip pools, you are causing fewer respawns, and thus,
fewer chances to get the good stuff (eels and wreckage). Plus, Oily
Blackmouth pools seem to drop a lot of mithril trunks. I noticed (and this
may not be related) that when I maxed out my fishing (with all the extra
gear from the competition, etc) that I am almost guaranteed to catch a
mithril trunk from each blackmouth pool. This could be pure coincidence....
but I'm not certain it is.

So.. once again... fish *EVERY* pool.

As for storing the trunks.. here's what I learned: For a short run,
storing the trunks directly in your bag is best, but if you are going to be
fishing for anything more than 15 minutes or so, you need to empty the
trunks. The reason is that you will get a LOT of the same items, and these
items stack. Trunks, themselves, don't. I tend to be able to carry much
more by actually unloading the trunks than by carrying trunks themselves.

At the end of my fishing trip, I make my oils, and post everything on the
AH... the best night to post on the AH is Friday night, for 24 hours.
Every time I do, almost everything sells. Weeknights, it's slower, but the
materials (leather, cloth, oils) still sell anytime.

I will post every green item I catch on the auctionhouse twice only. After
that, it gets sent to be disenchanted, and the materials posted for sale.
They always sell. Most of the greens are only worth 1-4 gold each.. but
sometimes, you catch a few that are worth 6-8 and then the big guys worth
much more, and those are usually patterns. Oddly enough, all patterns and
recipes sell well.

Stranglekelp always sells for just over 2 gold per stack on my server, and I
always have multiple stacks after a fishing run. Rumsey Rum sells very well
as well, for around a gold each on my server... They even sell in uneven
stacks...

That's it.. not much of a secret, really.. just a method I discovered that
allowed me to save up, quickly, for my epic mount.. I think the record for
earnings using this method for me is 175 gold in one night. of course, I
fished for MANY hours to achieve this in one day, and had WAY too many
auctions going at once. And.. I did it on a Friday morning, allowing me to
sell a lot of stuff early on as the east coast people logged in and bought
it up, then i got the west coast crowd later.

Anyway.. I swear that if you do this, you will make some good coin,
depending on the market on your server. Of course, you need alchemy skills
to accomplish some of this (or a friend that will make the oils/potions for
you). Like I said, I can, at will, pull in around 50g per night if I am
saving for something pretty easily, and still go off and do some questing
with friends if i wish. Because of this, i have learned fishing on every
character I have... it absolutely rocks. Not as good as when they had the
gem stuffed fish.. but not too shabby, either.

Sometimes, if i am doing small trips, I will save up the bolts of cloth and
leathers in the bank until I get 20 of them.

What I should do, however, is post my tips on winning the fishing
competition on my site (murlocguide.com).. That competition bugged me for a
few weeks until i figured out how to get closer and closer to winning. I
mean, damn.. those guys that were getting 40 fish when I was barely breaking
20 drove me nuts!!

Probably not, the fish used in alchemy are worth quite a bit, stonescale
eels in particular - they can go for up to 1g each, depending on demand.
Plus you can fish trunks containing miscellaneous things like bolts of
cloth etc which are worth a bit.

Yikes, sounds like I chose some good professions then! (herbalism and
alchemy), plus I need to give this fishing thing another shot. Smile

But I'm guessing that these eels and the more expensive stuff comes at a
much higher level, right? I'll do some research....

You need about 250 fishing (including any skill boosts) before you can
consistently catch fish where stonescale may be found. There are several
entirely safe places where a low-level with the requisite skill could catch
them, but I'm not telling you where because it destroys the market. *
