No, it isn't an exaggeration. Here's what I tend to do:
I fish STV almost every day. I generally only do it for a couple hours
before I get bored and move on to other things... but you can fish it all
day if you like. You generally catch 3 things there:
Oily Blackmouth - These go into blackmouth oil (I'm an alchemist as well),
and if I can't sell that, I put the oil into water breathing potions. They
sell alright on my server. I usually don't like to fish Oily Blackmouth
because they are the hardest seller, however, I seem to catch at least 1
mithril trunk with every blackmouth pool.. sometimes 2. I fished one pool
once and got only one fish.. everything else was trunks or stranglekelp.
That was a great blackmouth pool.
Firefin Snapper - These make fire oil. I sell these on the auction house in
stacks of 5 and 20 only. Individuals don't sell, nor do stacks of 10. Not
sure why. 5 and 20 almost always sell, though. Go figure.
Stonescale Eels - These are the best catch of all. I turn them into
stonescale oil and sell in lots of 20 only. I get between 15-20 gold for
each stacvk, depending on the market that day. There are often nights where
my oil is the only oil available on the AH. Those are the best nights.
These are guaranteed sellers, every time. I usually catch 20 per day easily
in STV (and you catch them BETTER in Tanaris). Of course, it helps to know
that the fishing works on cycles, and at midnight, server time, the
stonescale eel really come out in force. I can almost guarantee that I will
stumble on enough stonescale eel for a stack or two each night starting at
midnight, server time.
Beyond this, you have Floating Wreckage. In the southern part of STV on the
west coast, and the entire east coast, you catch Mithril trunks. The only
real difference between this and the iron lockboxes you catch on the west
coast, further north, is that mithril trunks will often have bolts of
runecloth in them. Iron lockboxes usually stop at silk. They all also
usually contain various forms of leather, some cash, and maybe some green
items (and a rare blue or two). Sometimes, as stated in a later post here,
you do catch big ticket items that sell between 30-50 gold themselves.
Those are great fishing days.
So.. I generally wander up and down the ENTIRE west coast of STV several
times during my fishing expedition fishing EVERY SINGLE POOL. This is VERY
important. If you start skipping pools, you will not get nearly as much
stuff to sell. Every pool you fish causes a respawn to happen at some point
in the near future. Might not be in the same spot, but it will happen
somewhere. If you skip pools, you are causing fewer respawns, and thus,
fewer chances to get the good stuff (eels and wreckage). Plus, Oily
Blackmouth pools seem to drop a lot of mithril trunks. I noticed (and this
may not be related) that when I maxed out my fishing (with all the extra
gear from the competition, etc) that I am almost guaranteed to catch a
mithril trunk from each blackmouth pool. This could be pure coincidence....
but I'm not certain it is.
So.. once again... fish *EVERY* pool.
As for storing the trunks.. here's what I learned: For a short run,
storing the trunks directly in your bag is best, but if you are going to be
fishing for anything more than 15 minutes or so, you need to empty the
trunks. The reason is that you will get a LOT of the same items, and these
items stack. Trunks, themselves, don't. I tend to be able to carry much
more by actually unloading the trunks than by carrying trunks themselves.
At the end of my fishing trip, I make my oils, and post everything on the
AH... the best night to post on the AH is Friday night, for 24 hours.
Every time I do, almost everything sells. Weeknights, it's slower, but the
materials (leather, cloth, oils) still sell anytime.
I will post every green item I catch on the auctionhouse twice only. After
that, it gets sent to be disenchanted, and the materials posted for sale.
They always sell. Most of the greens are only worth 1-4 gold each.. but
sometimes, you catch a few that are worth 6-8 and then the big guys worth
much more, and those are usually patterns. Oddly enough, all patterns and
recipes sell well.
Stranglekelp always sells for just over 2 gold per stack on my server, and I
always have multiple stacks after a fishing run. Rumsey Rum sells very well
as well, for around a gold each on my server... They even sell in uneven
stacks...
That's it.. not much of a secret, really.. just a method I discovered that
allowed me to save up, quickly, for my epic mount.. I think the record for
earnings using this method for me is 175 gold in one night. of course, I
fished for MANY hours to achieve this in one day, and had WAY too many
auctions going at once. And.. I did it on a Friday morning, allowing me to
sell a lot of stuff early on as the east coast people logged in and bought
it up, then i got the west coast crowd later.
Anyway.. I swear that if you do this, you will make some good coin,
depending on the market on your server. Of course, you need alchemy skills
to accomplish some of this (or a friend that will make the oils/potions for
you). Like I said, I can, at will, pull in around 50g per night if I am
saving for something pretty easily, and still go off and do some questing
with friends if i wish. Because of this, i have learned fishing on every
character I have... it absolutely rocks. Not as good as when they had the
gem stuffed fish.. but not too shabby, either.
Sometimes, if i am doing small trips, I will save up the bolts of cloth and
leathers in the bank until I get 20 of them.
What I should do, however, is post my tips on winning the fishing
competition on my site (murlocguide.com).. That competition bugged me for a
few weeks until i figured out how to get closer and closer to winning. I
mean, damn.. those guys that were getting 40 fish when I was barely breaking
20 drove me nuts!!
