It's stupid, considering most of their 'tricks' (get Auctioneer, learn to
farm) are pretty much available for free on almost any WoW site.
I'm constantly telling people how easy it is to get gold, when they start
begging in the middle of Stormwind. I follow my own policies and can get a
character his starting mount money quite easily before ever leaving Elwynn
Forest. Now, this makes it sound like I'm doing it all in four hours... I'm
not. I'm staying in Elwynn for DAYS, mining copper and smelting it and
selling it on AH for 2-4g per stack. I can usually mine 10 stacks a day
before I get so terminally bored that I go play something else for a while
(meaning something completely unlike WoW, like Civ 4 or ET:QW). That's
20-40g per day, depending on AH prices. So it takes me a week of mining to
earn 100 gold.
It's that simple, but it _is_ time-consuming.
Of course since you're wandering around Elwynn you can also collect VT for
some copper, starting Cooking mats for selling on AH (usually sell for 50s
per stack of 10 for Chunks of Boar Meat and Stringy Wolf Meat), and linen
cloth dropped from the kobolds (sell for 10-20s per stack, assuming you've
used all you want for First Aid and/or Tailoring). And of course copper
deposits occasionally drop gems as well, more pure profit.
And you could also supplement this with Herbalism, but starting Herbalism
mats don't sell for much. The time required for gathering a stack, and the
comparative value between a stack of Peacebloom or Silverleaf compared to a
stack of Copper Ore/Bars means it's worth more just to keep running around
mining than picking flowers.
So my starting advice to people who beg, or otherwise need cash, is:
1) Be prepared to spend lots of time on this game.
2) Spend 2 silver on 2 things: picking up Mining as a profession, and a
Mining Pick.
2a) If you don't have 2 silver, go back to the starting zones and kill
beasts and pick up teeth and hides and claws and sell them until you have 2
silver.
3) Either get Auctioneer, or study the Auction House to figure out the
average price of copper ore/bars.
3a) Bars sell better than Ore.
4) Go quest for a while. When you see a copper deposit nearby, mine it.
It'll stack up. Quest until you hit 10th-12th level, at which time you can
handle almost anything the starting zone can throw at you.
5) Go mine. Find out where the deposits are. Usually this can be done in a
circuit of the zone. (Gatherer is good for this but not absolutely
necessary.)
6) When your bag is full come back and sell.
6a) Use the first load to buy MORE BAGS. 10-slots if you can afford them.
(Hell, go for 16-slot bags if you can, you will thank yourself many many
times later.)
Repeat steps 5-6 as needed. Yes, it's boring; yes, it's time-consuming. It
works; don't knock it. It's made me tons of money. And later on the same
thing can be applied to other zones, for more money.
This is assuming you start in a normal zone, like Dun Morogh, Elwynn Forest,
Mulgore, Silverpine Forest, Eversong Woods, Azuremyst Isles or Durotar.
Note the one zone that this doesn't apply to: Teldrassil. There's no ore
deposits in Teldrassil. Instead, you replace Mining with Herbalism, because
you have no real choice. However, Teldrassil has TONS of Herbalism nodes,
and has all the level 1-75 Alchemy mats, Peacebloom, Silverleaf, Earthroot,
and Mageroyal.
Skinning can also be used to supplement the above, but only really works in
Dun Morogh, Teldrassil and Mulgore, where the majority of wandering mobs are
skinnable Beasts. With Teldrassil and Mulgore, you can't skin owls or
vultures, so it's less effective than you'd think. It's worth more to you
to keep moving to the next copper deposit than taking the time to skin the
critter that just tried to eat you.
Of course at higher level zones, Herbalism and Skinning start making serious
profit, but for a starting character or a complete newbie, Mining is the way
to go.
