Turns out there is a limit to the maximum amount of gold you can have
on one character. As reported by WoW Insider, the gold cap is 214,748
gold, 36 silver, 48 copper. Apparently within the past week, 2
players have hit this cap.
Now, I know not everyone has gold at this level, but I have a feeling
there will be a huge inflation in the cost of mats, reagents,
training, food and water, and just about everything else with the next
expansion to account for the new virtual-wealth WoW players now have
access to. >> Stay informed about: Gold cap |

2,147,483,647 is the maximum value that can be stored in a 32-bit
signed integer. I'd be surprised if it was indeed 48 copper rather
than 47 copper. Not that 1c makes a big difference, but it could imply
that this number is made up by someone who knows a bit about binary
but not quite enough. Then again I could be wrong, they might store it
as a negative number and do all the maths in reverse, but that would
be an odd decision just to increase the money limit by 1c.

WOW, that's a lot of gold. I guess I should have played my lvl 70
more than instead of lvling all these alts >> Stay informed about: Gold cap |

Supposedly, and according to WoW Insider, these players posted screen
shots along with their post on the official forums. One screen showed
a chat conversation with a GM. The player asked if there was a gold
cap, and the GM had no idea.
I can't look for myself at the moment, so I can't confirm it. And
screenshots can be faked. But it was the fact that 2 players posted
about this, and they mention one of the players (the one with the
screen shots) was in Germany. I don't think they mentioned the
location of the other player who posted about this. >> Stay informed about: Gold cap |

The GM said that there is a limit, and it's value is due to gold saved
in non-10 base format but that's all that he knows. Here's the link
(with screenshots) from EU forums:
http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=2405321605&sid=1
If the info in the forum thread is true, that player has PvP rank 14
and is exalted with over 30 factions - so it must be a player who is
in the game quite a long time. So it's not impossible that he amassed
all that gold himself. "Time is money friend!".

Well, it's probably base 0 as I can attest to the fact that many
characters have zero gold. >> Stay informed about: Gold cap |

If time is money, then money, real or virtual, is a clear indication
of what one does with their time. Adding in time activities that have
little or no money value, such as PvP rank and rep levels, and its
clear that this person has spent so much time indoors that he has
ceased to be what is normally defined as human. I believe he has
become something similar to a cave dwelling creature, with the only
"sunlight" he receives is the virtual light from his monitor.
I would like to see this person dragged, kicking and screaming, out
into the daylight to see if the sudden exposure to photons causes him
to go into shock and die.
Not my call though. >> Stay informed about: Gold cap |

That screenshot shows 2c less than the posted figure - I guess that
person can have 1c more. I therefore have no reason to doubt the
screenshot.

I'll tell you one things that's for damn sure- nobody stocks up that

Probably safer; perhaps there are caculations where the intermediate
values could be negative; or perhaps there's a not yet implemented
scheme where players could 'owe' money. Or pehaps lazy programming.
Besides, everyone knows that no would ever get more than 214,000 gold. >> Stay informed about: Gold cap |

As many have alluded to It's probably something as simple as being
limited by the data type used in the database.
For the sake of argument, if it every became a "problem" blizz's DBAs
could simply convert the data type to a larger range. >> Stay informed about: Gold cap |

It all depends on how it's stored, to be honest. It's possible that
the data type is something different but the means used to display it
on the client side is a signed integer. That would require a bit more
work to change, but still do-able for instance. But it is HIGHLY
probable that "Besides, everyone knows that no would ever get more
than 214,000 gold. " is the correct answer to why that's the cap.
It's also highly probable that it IS stored as a signed integer. To
be honest, there is really no reason not to store it that way. There
would be no really noticeable performance difference in storing it any
other way. And it's easy, so why not? >> Stay informed about: Gold cap |
