Archived from groups: alt>games>warcraft (more info?)

I made a run to the airport last night, had been there once before but
didn't stop to look around all that much last time and didn't go to the farm
then.

There's a lot of cool stuff to see. My favorite was being able to climb to
the tip-top of the "apparently" highest mountain in all of Dun Morogh and
the Wetlands. There's a flag of some sort planted there and the remains of
a small camp. Not too far from there there's another camp, and that one has
a roaring fire, but nobody around. Back at the airport, on the south end
the frostmane trolls were out in force in a constant battle with the dwarf
guards.

Things were less interesting at the farm. Pretty spread out, lots of
running but nothing all that interesting... except for the drop-off tunnel.
You run through a tunnel that drops off into nothingness. From what I've
read, you fall for a long time (like ten minutes) and end up near three
corners in Loch Modan I think... But, after falling for less than a minute,
I heard myself hit something and got the message that I was dead... even
though I was still falling and the map arrow showed that I was traveling
steadily south.

Eventually the scene changed from the falling one (which is really nothing
to see, just empty sky) to being at the graveyard in Dun Morogh, and my
minimal showed that's where I was, too. My corpse turned out to be right in
front of the entrance to IF, which is about where I'd have expected to land
based on the estimated position of the tunnel egress.

Has anyone made the big leap from the tunnel to nowhere? If so, where did
you land, and did you die on impact?

I visited the airport once, which took me forever (I couldn't make
that first jump). But didn't know about the farm. The airport is
kind of cool, but I didn't want to deal with the trolls since I was
only about level 11. I did get smacked by one from behind
while I was trying to line up for a screenshot, and so I took
off running.

I don't know what Blizzard's official stance is on visiting
these unfinished areas. The game lets me get there, and
the game map shows that an area exists to visit, and the
gryphon flights always hint at hard to reach areas...

A guildmate was in the airport area one day, and a GM popped up and
'suggested' that he vacate the area immediately. That was enough for him to
stop bothering to try to get to the 'roped off' areas...

I agree, though.. the game lets you get there.. so, until they close that
entrance (and currently, there seems to be only one more way to get there),
people are going to keep going there.

That's how I got there, and it still required a jump up for me.
Well, jumping and a bit of twisting and swearing. But when
I watched a video of it, it seemed like people had almost no
delay navigating the first steep bit. So maybe there's a
trick I don't know.

It's the area on the Dun Morogh map that looks like a valley
with a big road, but without an apparent way to reach it.

Just where IS this place? I did a search for "airport" and the only
reference was in the Stonetalon Mountains, and that doesn't sound right.

Thanks!

Ahh, I KNEW there had to be something there but couldn't find my way in.
So it sounds like you get there from Loch Moden.

Cool, thanks!

I made it to the airport! It wasn't easy and some of that country has
GOT to be the loneliest country in all of Azeroth!

This place is weird, it looks to me like it must have been planed as a
sort of back door to Ironforge, and the tunnel should go there but was
never finished. It was interesting that there are Griffins there, but
no Griffinmaster, and when you ask the guards they tell you to talk to
the guy in Ironforge.

Wonder if they will ever finish it, doesn't look like there is that much
more to do. It's too bad it isn't "open", it would be cool to fly one
of those little planes <G>.

Oh, this was a BIG help in getting there... but I never would have heard
of the place without you guys!

Easiest way (no jumps required) is to climb up a hard-to-see gorge in the NW
of loch modan.

I read somewhere that you could get to old Ironforge from the dropoff
tunnel. I've never pulled it off. I tried it with my mage slowing my fall,
but I still ended up falling to my death around Kharanos.

One think I did discover was that if you run at the closed doors from
various angles, you can see inside the buildings/tunnel they are apparently
blocking off.

I like poking around where I shouldn't be. Smile I was disappointed to
discover that there is simply nothing there in the unopened regions of the
map. Pre-expansion there was a strange elf structure and a dock to nowhere
north of the EPL. It was all that was there though, that, mountains and
water.

Look for another gorge I would say. I cant give you the locs unfortunately
since my account has run out, but it doesnt require any jumping or
acrobatics.

Tho once your up in the mountains you have to do a fairly steep jump down
about half way to the airport. Not a problem unless you're low level.

Catch a griffon from darkshore to moonglade to fly over it if youre not sure

Since they removed wall walking theres arnt as many options, but its still
possible.

****spoiler follows...

Go to the Northwest of winterspring and work your way up as high as

normally wouldnt be able to climb. Make sure to bring some nogenfogger!

Originally in the beta, the Airport was the main flight terminal for IF.
Old Ironforge was designed a lot like Exodar or Undercity, deep
within the mountain. There were two entrances, once at the front, and
another at the rear which led to the airport. I'm just speculating
here, but my guess is the airport had the griffin handler for local
flights, and airplanes for flying to Darnassus and/or the battlegrounds.
Near the end of the beta cycle Blizzard created the new Ironforge
directly on top of the old one. The long entrance was removed, and the
flightpath moved inside the base. You'll notice the war room has an
airplane hanger.

What is now called Old Ironforge is the original layout for IF, but
rather then completely disconnect it they made the front entrance go up
to the kings chamber in the new IF. The two massive doors in the
chamber with locks on them are the entrances to Old Ironforge.

There's hope that some day Bliz might turn it into an instance, kinda
like RFC in Orgimmar, or the Stox in SW.

The airport has seen content updates with every major patch. It used to
be there was nothing there at all. In 1.8 they added planes and some
gnomish pilots. In 1.9 they added the dwarven patrols that wandered
around on the ice. In 1.10 they added gnoll packs which would
periodically run into a dwarf patrol. And finally in 2.0 they made an
all out regular battle between the trolls and the dwarves.

All this just so that we have something to look at when flying north.
